Since it is 2010 now I will have to start all posts about albums from 2009 with: “This album might be a year old but here goes:”.

Erik De Vahl’s album Oh! My Spine might be a year old, but here goes: If you guys like sample driven electronica with wierd Swedish voices this is an album for you. Personally, I really digg the first part of the album, (except for the last song which is super nice).

Kent - Röd
Swedish band Kent has released a new album called “Röd” (Listen i Spotify). I am amazed how they keep exploring and evolving their sound. The songs go from synth driven dance music to melancholic heart breaking balcony jumper guitar ballads.
Singer and song writer Jocke Berg has yet again managed to compose the most amazing lyrics. Behind all the arpeggios and effects sad words touch Swedish social mentality, the lack of expression and a will to break free from it. For all of you non swedish speaking people kent.awardspace.com has translated all of the lyrics for you.

Kent – Vals För Satan (Din Vän Pessimisten)

After listening to Röd, for a couple of days I’ve gone back and listened to Tillbaka till Samtiden (Listen in Spotify) and it is definately worth listening to again.

The Antlers
The Antlers har recorded a downloadable session over at Daytrotter available here. I also noticed that Hospice has returned to Spotify after being removed for a month or so. It is available here. I can’t stop getting astounded over the marvelous lyrics in the songs from Hospice. Two of my favourite songs from the album are Kettering and Two (both are also on the Daytrotter session). I pasted the lyrics to these songs below.

Two

In the middle of the night I was sleeping sitting up,
when a doctor came to tell me, “Enough is enough.”

He brought me out into the hall (I could have sworn it was haunted),
and told me something that I didn’t know that I wanted to hear:
That there was nothing that I could do to save you,
the choir’s gonna sing, and this thing is gonna kill you.
Something in my throat made my next words shake,
and something in the wires made the lightbulbs break.
There was glass inside my feet and raining down from the ceiling,
it opened up the scars that had just finished healing.
It tore apart the canyon running down your femur,
(I thougth that it was beautiful, it made me a believer.)
And as it opened I could hear you howling from your room,
but I hid out in the hall until the hurricane blew.
When I reappered and tried to give you something for the pain,
you came to hating me again and just sang your refreain:

You had a new dream, it was more like a nightmare.
You were just a little kid, and they cut your hair,
then they stuck you in machines, you came so close to dying.
They should have listened, they thought that you were lying.
Daddy was an asshole, he fucked you up, built the gears in your head,
now he greases them up. And no one paid attention when you just stopped eating. “Eighty-seven pounds!” and this all bears repeating.

Tell me when you think that we became so unhappy,
wearing silver rings with nobody clapping.
When we moved here togehter we were so dissappointed,
sleeping out of tune with our dreams disjointed.
It killed me to see you getting always rejected,
but I didn’t mind the things you threw, the phones I deflected.
I didn’t mind you blaming me for your mistakes,
I just held you in the doorframe through all of the earthquakes.
But you packed up your clothes in that bag every night,
and I would try to grab your ankles (what a pitiful sight.)
But after over a year, I stopped trying to stop you from stomping out that door,
coming back like you always do. Well no one’s gonna fix it for us, no one can.
You say that, ‘No one’s gonna listen, and no one understands.’

So there’s no open doors and there’s no way to get through,
there’s no other witnesses, just us two.

There’s two people living in one small room,
from your two half-families tearing at you,
two ways to tell the story (no one worries),
two silver rings on our fingers in a hurry,
two people talking inside your brain,
two people believing that I’m the one to blame,
two different voices coming out of your mouth,
while I’m too cold to care and too sick to shout.

Kettering

I wish that I had known in
That first minute we met
The unpayable debt
That I owed you

‘Cause you’d been abused
By the bone that refused
You and you hired me
To make up for that

And walking in that room
When you had tubes in your arms
Those singing morphine alarms
Out of tune

They had you sleeping and eating and
And I didn’t believe them
When they called you a hurricane thunder cloud

When I was checking vitals
I suggested a smile
You didn’t talk for a while
You were freezing

You said you hated my tone
It made you feel so alone
So you told me I had to be leaving

But something kept me standing
By that hospital bed
I should have quit but instead
I took care of you

You made me sleep and uneven
And I didn’t believe them
When they told me that there
Was no saving you

Bon Iver - Blood Bank
If you are like me you might not have checked the latest Bon Iver news in a while. Then you will get really happy when you hear that they have released a really nice EP called Blood Bank ( Listen in Spotify ). The opening track with it’s doubled voices and the light electric guitar strumming continues where the last album, For Emma, For Ever Ago ( Listen in Spoitfy ), left off. The first song Blood Bank song starts with:

Well I met you at the blood bank
We were looking at the bags
Wondering if any of the colors
Matched any of the names we knew on the tags

You said see look it that’s yours
Stacked on top with your brothers
See how they resemble one anothers?
Even in their plastic little covers

I then, at the end of the EP, get pleasantly surprised when I hear a roughly autotuned/vocoder voice in Woods. If there is an album coming next year, this is a promising preview. All in all, Blood Banks four songs are definitely worth a listen!

Helsingborg
At midday, when I sit and work as diligently as I possibly could, I find out that a band from the city I visit every day has released one of the most bad-ass videos since 1982. To top that of, the song is one super cool retro synth pop song (may not sound as good as it is)! Watch, listen and marvel to This Vision – Young Hearts, from Helsingborg, the pearl of the sound, Sweden!

Animal Collective
I’ve been listening to In The Flowers by the Animal Collective non-stop for a week now. It is a truly amazing song that starts of slow but then explodes in a cavalcade of music where the lyrics go:

Then we could be dancing
No more missing you while I’m gone
There we could be dancing
And you’d smile and say, “I like this song”
And when our eyes will meet there
We will recognize nothing’s wrong
And I wouldn’t feel so selfish
I won’t be this way very long

Ah, it makes me all fuzzy inside! Do not forget to listen to the rest of the album where In The Flowers is at: Merriweather Lost Pavilion (Listen in Spotify)! There you will also find My Girls which is a totally awesome song!

Tutankamon
2008 the four members of Tutankamon sent off a demo to a record company without mentioning who were in the band.

-We were afraid that people would have preconceived ideas or to think it sounded good just because it was us, because it would sell. We want the people to like music in the first place,  the singer in Tutankamon said according to Norbottens Kuriren.

The first time I listened to Tutankamon I thought the music was very familiar and the singer’s voice, that I new I had heard before. I had to find out who they were.

It was not so suprising that the voice was familiar since the singer in Tutankamon is the singer in the band Shout Out Louds, Adam Olenius. He has a very distinctive singing voice and I love the Shout Out Louds!

The rest of the band members in Tutankamon are Peter Morén from Peter Bjorn and John, Daniel Varjo from The Concretes and Niklas Korssell from The Plan. Haha! What a superb combination.

In any case, this album, called just Tutankamon, is a great pop album and in track two, Have You Ever Been In Love , I am prompted to  jump around at home on the dance floor (dance floor = the empty floor area in our large office / guest room). Fun!

The album was released on 7 October and is available at Spotify (Listen in Spotify).

Girls - Album

Girls - Album

This is the first post on the site, and is there a better way to kick things of than to give everyone a chance to experience Girls much hyped album “Album” (Listen in Spotify)?

Album is one multifaceted album, starting of with an ecstacy of joy and Sebastien Tellier choirs in Lust For Life followed up by the amazing Track Laura. That is almost enough for me! To top it of you get classic rock n’ roll in Big Bad Mean Mother Fucker (nice song titel) and Morning Light that sounds just a little (tiny little) like M83, don’t you think?

You must also check out singer Christopher Owens cover of Daniel Johnstons True Love Will Find You In The End below.
